Diving in Wales can be truly spectacular, exciting and accessible!
The underwater scenery is truly stunning and the undersea has a wilderness quality that even Snowdonia or the Brecon Beacons struggles to compete with.
Pembrokeshire has a strong claim to the best diving in Wales along with the north and west coast. With the Gulf Stream warming the waters, the rugged rocky coast of the UK’s only coastal National Park has diving for every level of experience. St Bride’s Bay provides protection from Atlantic weather ensuring that there is almost always somewhere calm to dive. The exposed offshore Pembrokeshire reefs of the Hats, Barrels, The Smalls and the islets of the Bishops and Clerks are spectacular mini-mountains rising from over 50 metres depth to the surface.
At the other end of the country in North Wales, highlights include The Skerries, eight miles north of Holyhead, and Bardsey Island at the end of the Llyn Peninsula. Caswenan Rock southwest of Bardsey offers exciting reefs, pinnacles, and drop-offs.
However, there are also plenty of places in Wales where excellent shore diving and snorkelling can be found. For example, with Skomer Marine Nature Reserve is the only MNR in Wales and one of only three in the UK. Martin’s Haven, the gateway to the Skomer Marine Nature Reserve is an extremely accessible shore dive. Weather sheltered except in northerly winds, a short swim from the steeply shelving shore quickly takes you to rounded reefs at 15 metres depth with Ross coral, sea fans and soft corals. In North Wales, Trearrdur Bay is one of the most popular shore diving sites on Anglesey along with other North coast sheltered and shore accessed sites - Ravenspoint and Port Diana.
Ultimately, boat transport is an essential requirement to get to most of the best diving sites and there is an excellent choice of charter operators with local knowledge. Wales is well served by diving shops and services and dive boat charters, especially in Pembrokeshire and Anglesey. In addition to the operators available through the search below, most shops hire out equipment and will be able to recommend local dive schools. All either run their own dive-boats or can arrange or put you in contact with local charter operators.
Whatever your level, Wales can provide a diving experience that is truly unforgettable. And at the end of the trip, with a host of harbourside accommodation, pubs and restaurants offering excellent food, drink and a warm welcome, Wales is unbeatable.
