Activity Search : Kite Surfing

Kite Surfing is now the fastest growing extreme watersport in the world. It’s a fusion of surfing, wakeboarding, wakeboarding and kite flying producing a radical and freestyle sport which is truly exhilarating – the kitesurfer stands on a board with foot straps or bindings and use the power of a large controllable kite to propel them and the board across the water. The body is the only connection between the kite and the board – the skill is to control both the kite and the board at the simultaneously.

In spring 1999, there were only a few hundreds kitesurfers in the world and tens in Wales. However, the population of active kitesurfers is now well over a hundred thousand with Wales being a hot spot for the sport.

Welsh beaches are also excellent training venues and as an added bonus, the sport is a relatively easy one to learn. Initial training courses teach the basics of learning to fly the kite on land. Once mastered and now wearing a wetsuit, the kite is used to pull the kitesurfer through and along the water and as with wakeboarding, this is a truly exhilarating experience in itself. Progressing from here to getting up on the board, turning, jumping and even surfing upwind follows on in a surprisingly short amount of time.

Wales has a wide variety of schools, associations and courses to bring you up to speed, as with this sport, training is essential. Not all locations are ideal for kitesurfing however, there are some great sites such as Barry, Swansea Bay and Aberafan on the south coast. In Pembrokeshire, Newgale and Whitesands are great locations. Borth, north of Aberystwyth is excellent at low tide and further north, Hells Mouth, Abersoch and Llandudno West beach are choice location. However, there is nothing like local knowledge so please use the search below to find a specialist course, shops and schools to bring your skills up to speed.
